Collect, Mulch or Discharge?

PETROL-LAWN-MOWERS-2

We can all agree that a lush, green lawn is a thing of beauty. But what’s the best way of achieving that?

Firstly, There is no ‘right answer’ some will argue that a good quality mower that collects the grass clippings is the way to perfection. Others will insist that regular ‘Mulching’ is the way forward.

Basically, it all depends on personal preference.  Lawn type, condition, size and the amount of time you have spare, do come into it, but a beautiful lawn is achievable either way, it’s about picking the right ‘ Mower’ for you! Just remember some machines are versatile enough to do it all.

What is mulching?

In a nutshell, mulching mowers cut the grass clippings into smaller pieces and return it into the lawn as a natural, organic fertiliser.

Pro’s

  • It supplies the lawn with the nutrients it needs, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potash
  • No grass clippings to dispose of
  • No need for costly lawn treatments and additives

Cons

  • Grass shouldn’t be too long when mulching, because clippings that are too long can stick together, leaving unsightly ‘clumps’ on your lawn. When your lawn is growing at its quickest, you should mulch your lawn up to three times over a two-week period.
  • Mulching should be avoided when grass is wet. This will avoid build-up of grass under the deck of your mower.

Suggested machines for mulching:

Collecting

Collecting the grass clippings can be the easiest way to maintain control over your fast-growing lawn. With a huge range of ‘collector’ machines available, there is something for everyone. From the postage stamp size lawns right up to the 5 acre estate.

Pro’s

  • Keeps the lawn neat if you are not able to mow frequently due to bad weather, holidays, etc
  • If combined with a rear roller, a traditional ‘striped’ effect can be achieved.
  • Most can be fitted with an additional mulch kit so you can have the best of both worlds.
  • Controls thatch build up on lawn.
  • Minimises grass pollen and allergens around your property.

Cons

  • Collector machines tend to be a little longer in length, meaning their overall turning circle is larger. Can be tricky to manoeuvre in small, tight spaces.
  • Lots of grass clippings to dispose of

Suggested machines for Collecting:

Side/Rear Discharge

Pro’s

  • Simple to use. Just cuts the grass and discharges it on to the lawn in rows.
  • Tend to be shorter in length than collector machines so tighter turning circle.
  • Ideal for large lawns that don’t need a perfect finish
  • Machines can often be fitted with an optional Mulch kit.
  • Allow non-stop operation and faster mowing
  • Good result cutting taller or wetter grass.

Cons

  • Grass clippings are left on lawn
  • Mowing needs to be done frequently to avoid unsightly build up of grass
